Freq Of Nature Web Links
[Source: Freq Of Nature] UPDATE The Web Links page has been redesigned to allow for more links by using a Yahoo style user interface. This will allow easy navigation using an already familiar interface. The best web sites are listed at the top of each page with the rest being listed in alphabetical order. Administration is much easier and includes a feature to weed out inactive links. New links will be added as I run across web sites that peak my interest. Of course suggestions for links to add are also welcome with those pages that link back to Freq Of Nature given higher priority. Wednesday, September 25, 2002

FCC Grants Certification Approval for Uniden Digital Capable Scanners
[Source: Uniden America Corporation] Bearcat® APCO P-25 Capable Units Available in Late 2002 FORT WORTH, Texas, September 16, 2002 - Uniden America Corporation today announced that the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) granted certification approval for the company's digital capable scanners, the Bearcat BC250D handheld and the BC785D base/mobile scanner, on August 22, 2002 (FCC ID: AMWUB316, covering both scanners). Uniden American Corporation unveiled its new digital scanner line at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January of 2002. "Our customers expressed a desire for a Uniden® APCO-25 product, and we are pleased to be able to offer our new Bearcat BC250D handheld and BC785D base/mobile scanning unit," said Scott Carpenter, Uniden Product Manager. "With the ability to monitor conventional, trunked and APCO P-25 conventional and trunked systems, these models are state-of-the-art radio scanners." APCO Project 25 is a joint effort of U.S. federal, state and local government, with support from the U.S. Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), to develop a universal digital standard for wireless Land Mobile Radio communication users. These standards enable critical communications for safety and security agencies around North American and allow interoperability among the different agencies. The BC250D and the BC785D models offer 1,000 channels, 10 banks and a frequency range of 25MHz - 1300MHz. The BC250D comprises all of the features of Uniden's market-leading BC780XLT in a handheld model, plus an additional 600 channels. Users of both models must purchase an APCO P-25 card, the BCi25D, separately. All models will ship in late November 2002. "We're pleased to be bringing these great Bearcat APCO P-25 capable units to marker," Carpenter said. "We expect more big cities to migrate to the APCO P-25 digital technology, like Los Angeles did this past year, to ensure agency interoperability among police, fire, EMTs and the like - and we believe that news organizations, businesses and consumers will want to monitor these signals." Uniden officials stressed that APCO P-25 digital scanning technology simply gives users the ability to monitor the unencrypted day-to-day activities and signals of standard city and government service departments - but in no way allows users to monitor encrypted signals from national and local security organizations or any type of cellular transmissions. In a separate announcement, Uniden also detailed its plans to marker its own easy-to-use scanner programming software, which was demonstrated in its booth at CES 2002 in Las Vegas. The software, to be called E-Scanner™ Software, will allow users of Uniden scanners with data ports to easily program frequencies into channels and banks of their scanners. Patriot Day Community Remembrance Event in Simi Valley
[Source: Freq Of Nature] ![]() ![]() UPDATE Photos from the Simi Valley Patriot Day Community Remembrance event have been posted to the web site. This event actually started at the Mount Sinai Memorial Park with a small group of emergency services personnel. At about 5:30 pm the group attending the service at Mount Sinai Memorial Park were escorted by police to City Hall. Since the public event at City Hall didn’t start until 7 pm, this gave folks some time to emotionally decompress. Counseling was available to all at a small gazebo between City Hall and the Police Station. The citizens of Simi Valley showed their support by attending this event in mass numbers. If I have to guess I’d say there were about 4,000 soles in attendance. That’s a lot of people considering this wasn’t the only Patriot Day event in the area. It was a sea of red white and blue seated on all types of blankets and portable chairs. Ventura County Fire Truck 41 used their ladder to position a large American flag over the stage and later lowered it to make it a backdrop for displaying a plaque that was dedicated. The event started with the Simi Valley Police and Fire Department Honor Guard followed by the Pacific Coast Highlanders Pipe Band. Once the colors were displayed the Simi Valley Youth Council Members lead the pledge of allegiance after giving a detailed explanation of the pledge of allegiance. Introductions and many short speeches by elected officials preceded the guest speakers. The first guest speaker was Richard R. Rush, President, California State University Channel Islands. The second guest speaker was Dan White, a survivor who was on the 82nd floor of the World Trade Center and a Simi Valley resident. Dan White, after receiving a standing ovation, shared his experiences of that tragic day. Dan, along with a small group of other fellow employees, disregarded the instructions over the public address system telling them to stay put because of falling debris and instead fled the building. The company Dan works for lost 60 people that day, four of which were close friends. Dan also gave his sincere condolence to Rosanne Costanza, a Simi Valley residence who lost her son, Daniel Lee, on flight 11. Dan White ended his speech with another standing ovation. Candles that were given out to attendees before the start of the event were lit and held high as the Santa Susana Jazz Choir sang. The sea of waving candlelight moving in motion with the music was quite a sight to see. Extinguishing of the candles followed a moment of reflective silence. The event ended with the Color Guard and Pipe Band playing Amazing Grace. An impromptu song of God Bless America broke out along with several chants of “U.S.A. U.S.A.”. The crowd dispersed quite quickly given the number in attendance. The drive home was accompanied by the sight of street corners crowed with candles and folks waving American flags along with the sounds of horns honking at each of these corners. Police, business team up for safety
[Source: Ventura County Star] Simi Valley Police Foundation forms business group to raise money, build volunteer patrol network By Roberta Freeman The Simi Valley Police Foundation is forming a new group -- the Business Associate Round Table -- to help raise an additional $20,000 annually for programs designed to maintain Simi's ranking as the nation's safest city. In exchange for a $150 donation, business owners get a plaque to display acknowledging their support, membership in the foundation and a complimentary admission to the chief's breakfast held several times a year. The proposal for the program will go before the City Council for approval later this month. Councilman Steve Sojka, president of the foundation, has been pounding the pavement the last few weeks to present the program, which he said has been very well-received. "Businesses get bombarded with calls from statewide police foundations, but they are tired of the money not going to the local police department," Sojka said. While the core activities of the police department are funded by the city, such ancillary programs as the K9 unit, Special Weapons and Tactics Team, Drug Abuse Resistance Education and the Citizens Academy are possible because of the fund-raising efforts of the Simi Valley Police Foundation. The hope of the foundation board is that money from the round table will help launch a new program, a citizens patrol, which would put citizen volunteers behind the wheel of retired police vehicles to keep an eye on city streets, parks and alley ways. The citizen patrol is a program City Councilman Paul Miller, former Simi chief of police, has long wanted to implement. Miller, who continues to concern himself with issues regarding public safety, said he wants the patrol to serve as extra eyes and ears in the community for any potential problems in the city, ranging from a stalled car in an intersection to suspicious behavior around homes, schools and business. Miller said he does not want the volunteer patrol to confront anyone. Armed with cell phones, patrol volunteers will call the police department to handle any potential situation. "I would want them to do what anyone else would do when they are driving around the city and looking around at what is going on," Miller said. Currently, the Police Foundation's biggest money-maker each year is a golf tournament at Lost Canyons Golf Club. Dave McCormick, a citizen volunteer in charge of the Aug. 26 tournament, said the final figures have not been tallied, but last year's event raised $30,000 and he hopes to raise as much, if not more, this year. McCormick said police are tremendously popular with the business community and citizens alike. "They all want a place to live that is safe for them and their families," McCormick said. Labor day shake and bake
[Source: Southern California Seismic Network; Freq Of Nature] ![]() Californians joke that when the ground bakes the earth shakes, even though there is no scientific proof of this (the Northridge quake was on a cold January morning). Following the near recorded breaking heat of this years Labor Day an earthquake struck Southern California near the community of Yorba Linda in Orange County. The light earthquake occurred at 12:08am PDT on the morning of September 3rd, 2002. The magnitude 4.6 event occurred 6 km (3 miles) North East (52 degrees) of Yorba Linda (33:919N 117.76W) at a hypocentral depth of 7 km (4 miles) Preliminary earthquake report by the Southern California Seismic Network. Simi Valley Police Department to get armored vehicle
[Source: Ventura County Star] The Rancho Simi Community Park Lagoon could serve as the carwash for a vehicle the Simi Valley Police Department is eyeing for its fleet -- an amphibious armored rescue vehicle. The department has been offered the vehicle free from a federal surplus program. Plans are in the works to have the 28,000-pound, all-wheel-drive vehicle shipped to Simi Valley from Washington state. Once it arrives, city officials will kick a few of the 41/2-foot-high tires to see if it's worth keeping for the Special Weapons and Tactics unit. |
