Vandenberg Air Show Frequencies
[Source: Tracy Justus]

I made it up to the air show in time to spend about two hours checking out the displays and watching a few performers. They have this groups of six private pilots that perform impromptu stunts over center line. It was amazing listening to them on the radio. They would call out what stunt they were going to do with many of them over show center at the same time. You litterally had a constant barage of aircraft performing stunts right in front.

I took some excellent photos including some of an F-16 flying formation with a P-51. Tommorrow should shed some more excellent photo ops.

I made some attempts to contact others from the Yahoo groups on FRS Ch 1, 7 and 11 with no luck. I'll give it a try again tomrrow.

Ok, here's the frequency info I have from the two hours out at the show today.

The base uses a trunked radio system. Many of the talk groups have either digital or encryption since all I hear is the familar sound of bits, bytes and nibbles. I have confirmed that talk group 3248 is their police talk group. I didn't spend any time at all at the show monitoring this, I'm just now listening to this while I type this in a near by motel.

Mark Zurovski's comments from SoCalMilCom
The weather (fog) can be as good (bad) as Mugu's. Vandenberg is also right on the beach. If they get all of the scheduled statics and flyers and some nice weather it looks like it will be a pretty good show. This is not a heavily advertised event so the crowds are nowhere near as large as some of the others. Be prepared for shuttle busses, I remember them running smoothly last time.

I think the last show they had was back in August '98 and I remember them using 123.0 and 372.2 for the Airboss. The 76th Helicopter Flight (Callsign BLADE) is the only flying asset they have up there and here is the frequency card, which happens to be in the archives, from one of their MH-1N's (#69660 HV) that I found at the Van Nuys show in 2000;

1. GRND/CLNC 275.8 121.75
2. VBG TWR 326.2 124.95
3. LA CENTER 327.8 124.15

Irene is one of the offshore oil rigs, note the old SPORT uhf. As far as I know, everything else is good***. Others you may want to plug in are 127.65, 266.0, 286.4, 349.3. In addition to the two FRONTIER's on the above card, these four F's have been used for various launches since the '98 show. 382.3 was found by my Scout down at El Centro last March, it may have been the Viper West Demo, which is on the schedule for this show too. I always plug in whatever is on the airnav.com site.

***132.75 is a Vandenberg FRONTIER frequency. It is also an Edwards SPORT frequency. There have been major conflicts between the two when Vandenberg has had launch attempts in the past. For one reason or another I've completely missed the last four or five launch attempts so they may have changed this one. Or not. No promises, no guarantees, but this is what I'm going with. I always search around alot at shows too.

Looking around the airshow site, scanners are specifially mentioned as being ok. I wonder if Brutus has a jump frequency ?

Uniden Clears the Air; Digital Radio Scanner Capabilities
[Source: Uniden]

It's no secret that the BC250D and BC785D are the most sophisticated scanners ever built. With that said, it's understandable that we have the biggest anticipated launch of a Bearcat scanner that Uniden has ever seen. With big anticipation comes big perceptions and rumors as to what the scanners will and won't do. As the delivery of the BC250D and BC785D are close at hand, we feel we must clear the air on some confusion to the coverage of these scanners.

Perhaps the biggest question is in regards to the four different types of APCO P-25 radio systems and whether or not our digital capable scanners can monitor them. Uniden is proud to announce the world's first APCO P-25 digital scanner will monitor three of the four types of APCO Project 25 systems. They are:

Conventional P-25
Trunked at 3600 baud
Mixed Mode at 3600 baud

The APCO P-25 trunked system at 3600 baud is the most common P-25 system in operation today.

The other APCO P-25 trunked system operates totally digital at 9600 baud. The ability to monitor these pure digital systems is still in development. Therefore, the first generation of APCO P-25 scanners, the BC250D, BC785D and BCi25D will not monitor these systems. There are a few agencies that use this total digital system and include the states of Michigan, Colorado, Minnesota and the city of Austin, Texas.

Rest assured that the BC250D and BC785D are just the first in a family of Bearcat digital capable scanners to be produced by Uniden. As we continue to grow the family in this series, so will their coverage's of various other digital signal systems.
