Protesters target media rule proposal [Source: Ventura County Star/The Associated Press] By Gary Gentile, The Associated Press LOS ANGELES -- Protesters around the country sent a message Thursday urging federal regulators not to allow large media companies to increase their control over television, radio and newspapers. The demonstrations were staged just four days before the Federal Communications Commission was scheduled to consider eliminating many restrictions on media ownership in the same city. Another proposal would raise an existing market cap that prevents any one company from owning a combination of TV stations that reach more than 35 percent of U.S. households. More...
Los Padres forest, county fire seasons will start Sunday [Source: Ventura County Star; Photo: Freq Of Nature] By David Montero  Fire season opens Sunday in Los Padres National Forest, and firefighting crews plan to increase emergency response to reports of wildfires in the area, officials said Thursday. Kathy Good, spokeswoman for Los Padres National Forest, said the late winter and spring storms have created a fresh fuel source of grass that could become a danger as the season progresses. However, this is a later opening for fire season than last year when forest officials kicked it off on May 13. "Even though things are green, we could get a strong fire with strong sustained winds, Good said. "We don't want people to be complacent. We want them to be fire-safe."
