FCC Publishes new rules for narrowbanding
[Source: Ed Tobiasz]

Today, July 17, 2003, the Commission's narrowbanding order was published in the Federal Register. With publication, frequency coordinators and licensees have two new licensing deadlines for wideband systems in the 150-174 MHz and 451-512 MHz ranges.

(1) The Commission will not permit applications for new systems seeking to operate with a bandwidth greater than 12.5 kHz after January 17, 2004.

(2) The Commission will not permit applications modifying a system using more than 12.5 kHz of bandwidth if that application would expand the authorized contour of the licensee after January 17, 2004.

Other deadlines resulting from the Commission's narrowbanding Order include: January 1, 2005 -- the date on which the Commission will no longer type-accept 25 kHz equipment; January 1, 2008 -- the date on which the Commission will no longer permit the manufacture and importation of 25 kHz equipment; January 1, 2013 -- the date for which non-public safety licensees must be operating at no greater than 12.5 kHz bandwidth; and January 1, 2018 -- the date for which public safety licensees must be operating at no greater than 12.5 kHz bandwidth.
