Videographer Held in Leona Valley Arson
[Source: LA Times]

A fire that destroyed four houses and consumed more than 5,000 acres last summer was set by a freelance videographer who sold footage of the blaze to television news stations, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said Friday.

Joshua Harville of Palmdale, 23, was arrested on suspicion of setting the fire that forced more than 200 people to flee for their lives. He was held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Harville's arrest in Palmdale Friday culminated an 11-month investigation into the cause of the Sept. 3, 2002, blaze in Leona Valley by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Arson/Explosives Detail, the U.S. Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry.

It took more than two days for 750 firefighters to control the fire, which spread quickly through brush parched by one of the driest years on record. Some evacuees escaped with only the clothes on their backs.

Investigators have not determined a motive, but said that Harville was linked to the crime through statements he made during television news interviews as well as through video footage he sold to news stations.

Ventura County takes step to move fire station 43
[Source: Ventura County Star; Photo by Freq Of Nature]

The Ventura County Fire Protection District took another step this week toward relocating Fire Station 43 in the Santa Susana Knolls to a more central Simi Valley location.

By a 5-0 vote Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors, which governs the district, approved starting negotiations for the district to purchase one of three vacant lots around the Los Angeles and Yosemite avenues area.

"I know that now that they have the approval, the powers to be are anxious to tie up the loose ends on it. We'll probably try to do that within the next several weeks," said Division Chief Ken Maffei.

The proposed sites are 2.5 acres on Los Angeles Avenue just east of Yosemite; one-half acre on the southeast corner of Stowe Street and Yosemite Avenue; and 1.5 acres on the southwest corner of Stowe Street and Yosemite Avenue.

Information sharing plan could become a six-county effort
[Source: Chico Enterprise Record]

By GREG WELTER

Using centralized dispatch centers, up to six north state counties may eventually use a fancy new database to share information among its own law enforcement agencies - and with each other.
But supporters of the plan, still in its infancy, are already challenged by questions about how it should be developed and paid for.

Chico Police Chief Bruce Hagerty said he conceived of the idea when he realized it was all but impossible for police departments to talk with one another using standard radio and computer systems.

"It's the big missing link in our homeland security system," he said.

He'd like to see Homeland Security money pooled among agencies in Butte, Glenn, Tehama, Sutter, Yuba and Colusa counties to create a system that would allow officers in patrol cars and dispatch centers to instantly share information about offenders, suspects and incidents anywhere in the region.
