Minuteman III missile launch early Wednesday morning
[Source: Brian Webb's Launch Alert Mailing List]

The Air Force announced today that a Minuteman III missile is scheduled for launch this Wednesday morning from Vandenberg AFB. The launch window is somewhat different this time: 01:31-07:31 PDT.

For the most current launch information visit Brian Webb's excellent website, Rawhide Space Page II.

During previous missile launches, the WB6OBB repeater on Broadcast Peak in Santa Barbara has been an excellent source for up to the second status reports including count downs to T minus Zero. Since this missile launch is at such an early hour, it's uncertain if anyone will be on the net to broadcast status reports for this missile launch. In any case, the Launch Net normally becomes active about 20-30 minutes before the launch and continues until the missile is launched. During and after the launch this net is active with conversation about the awesome spectical from several vantage points.

Operation Dark Cloud - Terrorism Training Execise in Los Angeles
[Source: Brian Humphrey, Los Angeles City Fire Department]

This evening, Sunday August 3rd, the Los Angeles Fire Department will join local, regional, State and Federal agencies in a training exercise known as 'Operation Dark Cloud'.

This training exercise, focused on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) will involve a simulated emergency at a public site in the City of Los Angeles.

As an experiment, the Los Angeles Fire Department will post real-time information about the drill from early Sunday evening until the drill's conclusion early Monday morning, via the LAFD website at:

Details about Operation Dark Cloud will be offered via that website as they are acquired from drill participants.

We again remind you, Operation Dark Cloud is only a training exercise and not a real emergency.

PLEASE NOTE: The LAFD Special Notice System being used for this drill does *not* take the place of California's EDIS, which will be used by the LAFD and other public safety agencies in the event of a genuine disaster. To learn more about EDIS, please visit and bookmark:
