Interagency Communications Interoperability System
[Source: Freq Of Nature; The City of Glendale]

Photos from a recent tour of Glendale’s new trunked radio system have been posted to the FON website. The tour included the Glendale Communications Shop, a mountain top transmitter site and the Verdugo Communications Center which is located at Station 21.

While driving through a canyon on the way to the mountain top transmitter site I had the opportunity to test out the new system. The audio was so clear that I had to ask if we were in analog or digital mode. I had plugged the Freq Of Nature website on the air but since we were in digital-encrypted mode the only one who heard it was the fellow on the other end of the radio. Before I receive a blizzard of whining e-mails, I was assured that most of the talk groups will not be encrypted and even the dispatch talk groups will, at least initially, remain in analog mode.

The FON Glendale and Verdugo Fire pages have also been updated with some cool images and information.

President Bush is scheduled to fly by helicopter to Ventura County, most likely Newbury Park High School. Then he will tour the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, recognize volunteers and talk about the National Parks Legacy Project, according to White House press releases.

The president's visit is part of his travels throughout the nation this month to "highlight his initiative to expand conservation, promote individual stewardship and improve local economic conditions," according to the White House. While in California he is also attending at least two fund-raising events, one in San Diego and one in Irvine.

Ventura County Fire Department Gets New Engines
[Source: Ventura County Fire Department]

Ventura County Fire will see 12 new fire vehicles come into service by year-end. The new vehicles (Type III engines and Crash/Rescue truck) are an integral part of the equipment used by the county's fire department.
The 11 Type III engines and Crash/Rescue truck will replace aging vehicles now in service.
The Crash/Rescue truck is primarily used for flammable liquid fires, such as airport or hydrocarbon fuel fires. This vehicle is fully operative while mobile. The new Crash truck will reside at station 50 (Camarillo Airport).
Type III (model 15) engines are smaller more easily maneuvered vehicles. They are used for wildland incidents where a smaller vehicle is needed. The new "hi-tech" looking engines will accommodate inside seating for a crew of 4 and hold 500 gallons. They will be housed at various stations throughout the county.

Pegasus XL Rocket Launch Tuesday
[Source: Brian Webb's Launch Alert]

A Pegasus XL rocket carrying Canada's SciSat-1 satellite is scheduled for launch from California's Central Coast this evening. A converted L-1011 airliner will leave Vandenberg AFB at approximately 18:12 PDT and ferry the Pegasus to the launch point 74 miles southwest of downtown Monterey.

The Pegasus is slated for release at 19:10 PDT during a launch window that extends from 19:04:10 to 20:01:26 PDT. The vehicle will free fall for five seconds before its first stage motor ignites.

The rocket will fly south down the Western Range. If things go as planned, the vehicle will place the 330-pound spacecraft into a 400 NM circular orbit inclined steeply to the equator.

After a brief checkout, SciSat-1 will begin studying the chemical processes that control the distribution of ozone in Earth's atmosphere.
