LAPD Frequency Configuration by Harry Marnell
Harry Marnell's LAPD Frequency Configuration is a compilation of LAPD radio information from several digital radio users.

News and General Information

P25 Digital Radio

The Los Angeles City Police Department has made their final switch over to digital radio. This is not a trunked radio system but an conventional APCO Project-25 compliant digital radio system. Uniden and Radio Shack currently have digital capable radio scanners that can monitor the LAPD digital radio system.

Valley Communications Dispatch Center

The Los Angeles City Police Departments Valley Communications Dispatch Center goes online Monday morning; September 22nd, 2003. 911 calls will initially be spread between the Valley Dispatch Center and it's identical twin, the Metro Dispatch Center. Eventually the Valley Dispatch Center will be responsible for all Valley Bureau and some of West Bureau calls.

Divisions that have historically shared radio dispatch frequencies with other divisions will receive their own dispatch frequencies out of the pool of each bureaus tactical frequencies leaving each bureau two (2) tactical frequencies. During off peak times some divisions will revert back to sharing common dispatch frequencies.

Priority Tones

As of May 16, 2004, the Code-2/High dispatching priority has been discontinued and most of those calls are now Code 3. The number of Code-3 calls increased from about 500 a week to around 2000 a week.

As far as the tones, here's how they're supposed to go, although with the new consoles and digital mode, they don't always sound as intended:

Two tones Priority Level 2 / Code 2 call
Three tones Priority Level 1 / Code 3 call
One longer tone Retone - indicates that the assigned unit is being pulled off a lower-priority call for a higher priority call

Special thanks to the SoCalScan radio group for contributing this information.

LAPD Call Signs

The call sign is divided into three parts (Division - Unit type - Number). For example 1-ADAM-12 is from Central Division and is a two-officer patrol car number 12.
