County of Los Angeles Fire Department
This is the sign at the enterance on Eastern Avenue. The location is also
the home of the departments fire academy. There was a group of cadets on
their morning run..."I want to be a fire fighter..hoorah!" |
Command & Control Center
This futuristic looking building is our destination this morning, where fire
dispatch is located. |

Old tower This
is the original tower with it's new neighbor, the command and control
center. |
Antenna Farm It
was quite easy to find our way here since the hill top is scattered with
large antenna towers. Some of these towers are for other County agencies. |

A well grounded building
The command and control center is an earthquake resistant building. These
pictures really don't do it justice; you have to see this to be awed by it.
The building sits in a hole atop a bed of springs. Everything that connects
the outside world with the building must be able to move with an earthquake.
Normally a buildings ground is the water pipes leading into the ground. |

Shake it, don't break it
The entrances to the building are like gang planks that can move several
feet during an earthquake. The water and sewage lines must also move several
feet as you can see from the flexable pipe below this enterance. The
building actually sits above the ground. |
Welcome abord
SCMA members who were dedicated enough to wake early on a Sunday morning
make their way across the "gang plank" into the building. |

In memory of...
This art work dedicated to their fallen brother and sister firefighters in
New York adorns the lobby wall. |
Building springs
This building spring is on display in the command and
control center. This building sits on a bed of these springs which allows it
to survive a major earthquake.
