TELEPHONE SWITCHBOARD To place a ship-to-shore call, a passenger would use one of the 500 stateroom telephones. A telephone operator at the ship’s switchboard puts the call through to the wireless room. |
TELEPHONE SWITCHBOARD TODAY The Queen Mary’s telephone switchboard was the center of her complex communications system. Originally located on “B” Deck,, the switchboard included positions for up to three operators handling 585 shipboard lines and 10 shore lines. The board is divided into color-coded steward’s sections for the four main passenger decks, with the steward’s pantry phone located at the end of each row. Other areas and departments are individually marked. |
