Wetting down the landing zone helps reduce the amount of debris kicked up by the rotor wash. Debris is not only dangerous to the helicopter but also to the persons standing near the landing zone.

Even with the landing zone wetted down, the Blackhawk still kicks up a tremendous amount of dust and debris.
