Simi Valley CERT is responsible for the Emergency Preparedness Expo. This
years event was scaled down from last years awesome exposition because it
was considered a distraction from the co-hosted Simi Valley Commercial
events.
Last years event included aerial demonstrations liken to an
air show including many helicopters and a sky diving team. While it was
unfortunate that one of the sky-divers from last years event missed his
mark, plummeting into a palm tree and landing in the middle of the commerce
booths, it gave the public an impromptu display of how emergency responders
instinctively react to unrehearsed events.
While it's not as glamorous as chomping a car apart to save
a traffic accident victim or instructing a frantic parent over the radio how
to revive a choking infant, one of the most important duties of public
safety professionals is to learn from past events. Without this pulp powered
time machine there would be no "Jaws of Life" or scripts for dispatchers who
are frequently the true first responders.

This is one of Simi Valley Police Department's newest motor units (MARY-7).
Motor units are unique in that they are both the worst enemy
as well as the best friend of the public they serve.
You will find these leather clad officers stalking their
prey, speeding motorists, from strategic hiding places. These officers
emotional skins have to be as thick as the leather on their boots because
they must take verbal abuse that would make the devil himself blush.
Since motor units are frequently the first on scene to a
serious traffic collision it shouldn't surprise you that they take traffic
laws so seriously.
Steering wheels may break your bones, but words will never
hurt you.

This officer was kind enough to turn on the LED traffic stop lights on this
new BMW police motorcycle (MARY-7).
The police department is in the process of equipping
vehicles with GPS devices so that dispatch can tell at a glance where police
units are and so that the location of a call can be displayed on mobile
computers mounted in each vehicle. In the case of motor units, the computer
will be a palm pilot which will be carried in the saddle bag.

Personnel CarrierThis amphibious armored personnel
carrier was given to the city, free of charge, by the Federal Government.
While it's amphibious abilities will most likely never been used, it will be
a valuable asset in replacing the aging "brinks armored car".
