There was a traffic collision on the 118 freeway as I was making my way home from work on Tuesday. Since I was in the slow lane on the opposite side of the freeway there was no way I could stop to assist. It looked like everyone was out of their vehicles and on their cell phones so I figured help was on it's way.

After passing the scene of the accident I exited the freeway at the next off ramp, found a parking lot near an over pass and took a few photos.

The first on scene was a CHP officer and as soon as the officer pulled up this fellow, who looked like he stopped to help, got back in his car and drove off. I didn't think much of this until I returned home and looked up the incident on the CHP CAD. I suspect this fellow wasn't involved in the accident since his vehicle wasn't damaged, but had stopped to help.

The CHP officer walked to the nearest victim, did a quick evaluation of him then walked to the next nearest car with another victim repeating this until he had checked on all the victims at the scene. This is a process of triaging, where time is of the essence you don't want to waste too much time on one victim. Make sure they are breathing, have a pulse and are mentally aware. I guess I did a bit of triaging when I saw everyone standing with cell phones up to their ears I figured they were all breathing, had a pulse and had the mental ability to call 911.

People, like myself, on the over pass started attracting others who stopped their vehicles on the over pass to look at the commotion on the freeway. I figured I wasn't helping much by being there so off I go back on my commute home.
